DISCOVERRING THE NEOLITHIC VALLEY
Otranto, Giurdignano, Minervino, Uggiano, Casamassella
Departure from Otranto You begin your journey from Otranto's lively Piazza Castello. Climbing into the saddle of your bicycle, you head south-west, following the signs for Valle dell'Idro. As you pedal, the urban landscape begins to give way to a more lush and peaceful nature.
Crossing the Idro Valley The Idro Valley is an enchanting green area, characterised by streams and small bridges. Pedalling along the valley, you immerse yourself in the tranquillity of the place, accompanied by the chirping of birds and the soothing sound of flowing water. Here you can stop for a moment to breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.
Arrival in Giurdignano Continuing north-west, you reach Giurdignano, a small town known for its numerous megalithic monuments. The historic centre of Giurdignano is charming, with its ancient churches and cosy squares. Here you can take a short break, perhaps sipping a coffee in one of the small squares.
Exploring the Dolmens and Menhirs From Giurdignano, you venture into the surrounding countryside to admire dolmens and menhirs. These ancient stone monuments, dating back to the Neolithic period, are scattered across the fields and offer a unique spectacle. Visit the Dolmen Stabile, the Menhir San Paolo and the Menhir Vicinanze I, each with its own history and mystery.Towards the Sassi della Vecchia
Continuing westwards, you head for the Sassi della Vecchia.These imposing stone blocks are another testimony to the prehistoric presence in the region. As you approach, the sight of these stones makes you feel as if you are travelling back in time, exploring the traces left by the ancient inhabitants of Salento.
Stop at Minervino di Lecce
The journey continues to Minervino di Lecce, a small municipality rich in history and culture.Here you can visit the Mother Church and the Crypt of Sant'Anna, discovering local traditions and typical Salento architecture. It is a great place to take a break and perhaps sample some local specialities, where an unmissable stop is the Forno Caroppo bakery. This historic bakery is renowned for its bread and traditional baked goods, prepared using artisanal methods that have been handed down for generations.
Visit to Uggiano la Chiesa
Continuing south-east, you reach Uggiano la Chiesa. This village is another jewel of the Salento, with its Church of Santa Maria Maddalena and the underground oil mills, ancient places where oil was produced. Departure: Otranto We begin our journey from Otranto's lively Piazza Castello. Climbing into the saddle, we head southwest, following the signs for the Valle dell'Idro. Pedalling along the paved roads, the cityscape begins to transform into a green and peaceful landscape.
Crossing the Idro Valle: The Idro Valley is an enchanting place, full of nature, streams and small bridges. As we cycle, we can hear the chirping of birds and the soothing sound of flowing water. This section of the route offers a regenerating experience, immersing us in the natural beauty of Salento.
Arrival in Giurdignano Continuing north-west, we arrive in Giurdignano, known as the 'Megalithic Garden of Italy' for the numerous dolmens and menhirs scattered across the landscape. We enter the historic centre, where we can admire the ancient churches and cosy squares. It is an excellent opportunity to take a short break and sip a coffee in one of the picturesque squares.
Dolmen and Menhir Exploration We leave the centre of Giurdignano and venture into the surrounding countryside to admire the dolmens and menhirs. These ancient stone monuments, dating back to the Neolithic period, offer a unique spectacle. We visit the Dolmen Stabile, the Menhir San Paolo and the Menhir Vicinanze I, each with its own history and mystery.
Towards the Sassi della Vecchia We continue west to the Sassi della Vecchia, imposing blocks of stone that are another testimony to the prehistoric presence in Salento. The sight of these giant boulders surrounded by nature makes us feel as if we are travelling back in time.
Stop in Minervino di Lecce
The journey continues to Minervino di Lecce, a small municipality rich in history and culture. Once there, we make a stop at the famous Bar da Carlo, known for its delicious local specialities and cosy atmosphere. It is the perfect place to freshen up and enjoy a rejuvenating break.
Continuing towards Otranto along the coast road Leaving Porto Badisco, we follow the coast road towards Otranto. This stretch of road offers breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea, giving us some of the most beautiful views of the Salento.
Attractions along the Litoranea
- Torre Sant'Emiliano: A 16th century coastal tower offering spectacular views of the coastline.
- Punta Palascia Lighthouse: The easternmost point in Italy, famous for its sunrise views.
- Bauxite Lake: A lake with a characteristic red colour, created in an old bauxite quarry, surrounded by lush nature.
- Baia dell'Orte: A hidden bay with crystal-clear waters and a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a regenerating break.
Return to Otranto Finally, we return to Otranto, where we can end our day exploring the history of the city. We visit the Aragonese Castle, the Cathedral with its famous floor mosaic, and stroll through the narrow streets of the historic centre, savouring the magical atmosphere of this coastal city.

From Otranto to the Alimini Lakes'
Otranto, Giurdignano, Palmariggi, Laghi Alimini
We begin our cycling trip from the picturesque town of Otranto, exploring some of the most fascinating and historical places in the region.
Departure: Otranto
- Starting point: Piazza Castello, Otranto.
- Direction: Head south-west following the signs for Valle dell'Idro.

Visit to the Sanctuary of Montevergine: From Palmariggi, we head towards the Sanctuary of Montevergine. This ancient sanctuary, situated on a hill, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. The sanctuary is a place of great spirituality and tranquillity, ideal for a reflective pause.
Direction Alimini Lakes: We leave Montevergine and head towards Laghi Alimini, two coastal lakes surrounded by lush, unspoilt nature. We ride along shady paths that run alongside the lakes, where we can admire the local flora and fauna. The Alimini Lakes are a perfect place for a relaxing stop, perhaps for a picnic surrounded by nature.
Return to Otranto: From Laghi Alimini, we cycle south-east to return to Otranto. This section of the route offers us beautiful views of the Adriatic coast and takes us back to our starting town.
Enjoying the History of Otranto: Once back in Otranto, we can end our day by exploring the city's rich history. We visit the Aragonese Castle, an imposing fortress with a fascinating history, and the Cathedral of Otranto, famous for its floor mosaic.
